Amelia and Chas jr helping themselves to coffee. This particular crew was partial to tea, as am I, but they liked a bit of coffee now and then. Click for full size.
Does caffiene affect them the way if affects most humans?
I have known a coulpe of dogs that weren’t bothered about drinking coffee, but loved to stick their schnozzles right down into an empty cup to snort the smell for minutes at a time.
If it does, it doesn’t show. They don’t get particularly hyper after tea or coffee, but they do have a serious fondness for tea. They’ll drink tea throughout the day, and they also take a lot of naps during the day.
I did draw the line at coffee beans though -- when I showed them coffee beans, they wanted to run off with them, and started chewing them immediately. I figured that might be a direct line to a heart attack, so all the beans were taken away.

So I googled ‘rats and caffeine’ to see what’s out there… Turns out, there is a LOT. Heh. :)

Much like my older relatives, though it’s mostly coffee.

Both look extremely cute while they’re at it.
Have the ratties tipped over cups while helping themselves to coffee or tea? Though I’d imagine it’s much harder to tip ove a mug than a Myrna style coffee cup (the narrow bottomed cups with gold-plated edges and golden brown flowers).

I have no doubt of that! I expect caffeine might affect younger rats more, those who are just out of ratlet phase. The ratlets have rarely liked tea, it’s a taste they grow into. Some of them never do develop a taste for it. Chocolate milk, now that’s a universal! Beloved by rats everywhere.

I guess caffiene will have a variable effect n diffferent rats too, like it does on humans. I’ve a friend who loves coffee, but gets palpitations if she has more than a cup a day. Oooh chocolate milk *wanders off to fridge where there is no chocolate milk, but there is tiffin*

What, you can’t infer the effect of caffeine on rats from human studies? My research career is ruined.

No, they’ve never tipped a mug or a glass. They are delicate gymnasts, and outstanding when it comes to balance.
Oh, I recognize the Myna style from my sproghood. Those never hold enough for me.
