Another storm seemed to be blowing in. I was looking out my studio window, and couldn’t figure out the intense light I was seeing, so naturally, I went out. Winds were about 25mph when I stepped out, and were ramping up quickly. I found the intense light, and was laughing, because it kinda looked like a portal to another universe was cracking open. Sometimes, I can truly understand why religious people get such fucked up ideas. As I was clicking away, it dawned on me that winds were now about 40mph, and branches were whipping and cracking. Where I am, you’re surrounded by trees, every which way. As I’m making my way back home, broken bits of tree begin to fly. Made it safely back and indoors. The wind reminded me of the ones generated by a nearby tornado years back. The high winds have gone intermittent now, and the sunset is a lovely, lurid orange. The ‘portal’ is gone, but it was certainly worth seeing! Most photos behind the fold, because lots of them. Click for full size.

These are incredible. You have such an amazing eye.
Anne, Cranky Cat Lady says
They look like paintings, not photos, like book illustrations. Definitely a portal to another world.
rq says
Holy shit, that is incredible. No colour adjustments?? That is really something, thank you for the photos. And yay for getting in safe.
These are just incredible. Especially the first, you get an idea how big and bright the Portal was. And the third last, where it is closing up. Wow.
Caine says
No, no adjustments, just resized. You see a lot of weird weather shit here, but this was a new one! Never saw anything like this before. I was standing out in the wind, laughing, because serious weird.
Thank you all so much, but I didn’t do anything except press the shutter. This was just one of those incidences of North Dakota Strange, and those are a matter of right place at the right time.
Charly says
Interesting does not say the half of it. Incredible pictures.

Fabulous!!!
Praise, then, Creation unfinished.
Giliell, professional cynic -Ilk- says
They are amazing, thank you!
But yeah, doing something stupid because of an interesting shot sounds like me. It’s probably how I’m going to die.
jazzlet says
Beautiful, and as Anne said they look like paintings, I’m not sure who as my memory is lousy for that sort of thing, but maybe Turner?
Lofty says
Very dramatic!
springa73 says
Wow!
(Sorry I don’t have more to say, but that pretty much sums up my reaction.)
Nerd of Redhead, Dances OM Trolls says
Wow, dramatic, amazing, and few other superlatives.
voyager says
Incredible photos! I don’t know what else to say. They’re amazing.
I do understand the laughing, though. I like to be outside when the weather’s crazy. I even own a full 2 piece rain suit and a sou’wester. Big weather gives me an electric alive feeling.
Caine says
Thank you all!
Giliell:
Yeah, but you have to get the shot, right? Wouldn’t surprise me in the least if I died that way. I was a little concerned about getting back home without getting a branch to the head, but I just had a few twigs in my hair.
Voyager:
Aye, me too. Storms are full of power, it’s amazing to be out in them. I’m envious of your gear!
avalus says
Powerful.
Caine says
Yes…at the time though, it was a pure WTF is that?! moment. :D
Joseph Zowghi says
Wow! Phantasmagorical.
Caine says
That is the perfect word, Joseph! Thank you.
Ice Swimmer says
In the pictures it is like a plethora of mythical creatures formed out of smoke, white-hot wossname and greenish (the right amount of silver in the alloy, but little to no copper) gold. I love these.
Caine says
Oh, if I said all the things I saw in these. There’s a world turtle, the profile of a face, a Thunderbird-Phoenix person, a dragon, a Klingon Bird of Prey ship, and so much more.
Thank you, Ice Swimmer! Even when I know it’s a bad idea to be out in such weather, it’s worth it. I’ve been here for 25 years or so, and have never seen anything like this, and I probably won’t see anything like it ever again.
Raucous Indignation says
Wow.
