An impressive looking place. High ceilings seen to go together with old big railway stations.

The train station in Battle Creek has been turned into a long, thin, restaurant. A fine place to dine when going “home”, and good food healthful alternatves at a reasonable price.

I haven’t been in the Concourse for many, many years, but I used pass through it from time to time -- back when I was in uni at Waterloo, and some of my family lived in Toronto. The “loft” is, indeed, impressive, and so are the acoustics. Even though it’s been decades, I can still hear the departure announcements ringing in my head:

“Bong- BAHNG-bong-bong! Via train, bound for Brampton, Georgetown, Guelph, Kitchener, London, Strath-roy,* aaaaand Windsor is now departing from plat-form fiiiiive.”

*For some reason, the announcer always made sure to draw out the name “Strath-roy,” as if to make damn sure you were aware that there were two syllables there.

I love Union Station. I love the sound of it from the inside, and the feeling of anticipation -- which is pretty much, as Lofty said, the magic that is train trips. And yes, more passenger rail -- in the US, in Canada, everywhere with bad rail infrastructure. Though they don’t build the stations like they used to, the Central Station here is a modern atrocity (but it works, I guess -- see here for a brief photo history; another view of the modern outside -- the inside looks like a shopping mall but more ragged around the edges and dirtier).
