A Finnish squirrel fact: The Finnish word for money, raha originally meant dried squirrel skin/pelt (modern word oravannahka). Back in the Iron Age and part of Middle Ages this place was a huge exporter of furs. There was also a nasty colonial practice called lapinvero (Lapp tax) in which Finns who were yeoman farmers would come and rob the Saami hunter-gatherers, who at the lived in the inner parts of what is now Finland.
