A stunning Green Woodpecker, from Charly: A new observation, first visitor of this species to my garden and first one I saw in my town as well. She did not visit the feeder however, but dug in the garden instead, probably an underground ant’s nest, since ants are their main food source. A delightfully beautiful bird. Gorgeous in Green, click for full size!

The colours of the woodpecker are wonderful. The frosty grass is a beautiful setting for the bird.

You just got me.
I was in the process of sending Caine some new pics when I loaded this page and I was like “I didn’t manage to send them, how did she get them already?” but then I remembered that we don’t have snow on the ground.

I love how they brace their tails against things. We have 4 or 5 species of woodpecker that we see here on a regular basis but this one is spectacular.

That first photo really shows the heft of the woodpeckers beak, beautiful bird.
