Beginning december 15, 2017, the inaugural National Gallery of Victoria Triennial will open its doors to the work of over 100 creatives from 32 countries. Among the artists, designers, technologists, architects, animators, and beyond is Australian hyper-realist sculptor Ron Mueck, who is presenting his largest ever work to date. ‘Mass’ is an installation of 100 individual human skull forms piled up on the gallery floor, each which engage with the architecture of the site.

One of those skulls would make an awesome chair -- just cut out the top and put a beanbag in.
As a mold-maker and sometime life-caster, I am in awe of the amount of work those must have taken. You’re looking at dozens of gallons of poly-resin, probably rotational-cast in pieces and assembled. And that’s not counting the sculpting and the molds. Those skulls probably kept a small team of production modellers busy for months.
I’m thinking they’d make great lawn art, too. Covered in a bit of moss, maybe some tendrils of vines growing through the teeth or nostrils. Although they might not last long outside, the breakdown could be interesting too. It would make a great counter to all the inflatable Santas, penguins and elves that currently litter my neighbourhood.
