Following the third presidential debate, Face the Nation host John Dickerson spoke to a group of voters in Nevada about why they supported either Trump or Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
A voter named Barbara explained that she was motivated to support Trump because “morality and values” were important to her.
“Based on what the country was based on,” she said. “I think that the laws that Obama has passed, the way the country has — I call it down turning. Some of the other people are proud of it and happy for it. I personally am against it, the homosexuals, the abortions. All the stuff, I am against.”
“When Donald Trump says ‘Make American Great Again,’ is that what you hear?” Dickerson wondered. “That it’s going to go back to before the time that you’re now describing?”
“That’s part of it,” Barbara agreed.
No, Barbara, morality and values aren’t important to you in the least. You wouldn’t know morals, values, or ethics if they leaped up and bit your nose. What is important to you? The need to control, dominate, and oppress others. The need to be sitting on top of the people heap. The need to be a judgmental asshole, pointing a finger in accusation and screaming about prayer. People like yourself Barbara, have this awful sadistic need to stomp all over other people you perceive as lesser, giving them the convenient label of sinner. You dream of an America that never was, like most ignorant white asses. I have a bit of news for you, Barbara – all your stuff, I am against. I suggest you run and hide, because all the liberal, queer, and thinking people, they are coming to get you, Barbara.

The people like Barbara are liars or idiots, or possibly both. NO ONE can hold The Orange One up as an example of morality or values or anything else that is good. He is the embodiment of so many things wrong with this country. Barbara and her ilk are unthinking dogmatic minions. It has become so clear in this election that there are people who will do and say anything to try and suppress the rights of everybody not like them. I may look like one of them, but I am so far from that mindset that it makes me angry to even hear their stupidity.

Oh, I know. They know that too, in spite of what they say. They think he’ll put white christians back on top of the heap, ruling everyone else, and giving them back the capability to ruin lives on a whim. Disgusting, to say the least.

In my experience “moral and good” means “hates all the people I hate as well”

Morality and values????
that guy on the internet says
Here’s the thing about that: for a very substantial fraction of the population (if I had to guess, I’d say at least 45% of the U.S. population), that is an important part of what morality is. Keeping different “kinds” of people in the correct boxes, arranging those boxes in the correct hierarchy of social dominance, and — crucially — punishing those who step out of line, matter to them in exactly the same way that opposing injustice and cruelty matter to us. And to them, we appear to be moral monsters: “How can you not care about these things!? What’s wrong with you people?”
I do believe that that orientation — for want of a better word — is on the decline; the long-run arc of civilization appears to bend away from authoritarian tribalism. Urbanization and globalization seem to nudge us in the right direction…eventually. In the meantime, we just need to organize to out-vote them.

that guy on the internet:
No, it isn’t. Especially for all the indigenous people around the world who are the only ones on the planet who are caring for bits and pieces of our earth. Urbanization leads to disconnection, and disconnection is not a good.
Charly says
Globalization has its plus sides, it brings us all more together. It alows people across the globe to connect and share information, or even seek and get help. Like we do now.
It also leads to overwhelming with information and mis-information, which complicates life in not a good way. So it has its ups and downs as well.
But honestly I find it hard to find any redeeming qualities of urbanization. City people tend to think that their food grows in supermarket, that all problems can be solved by buying some gadget and that nature is something they do not need to think about, only to watch it in TV when they feel like it. They are totally disconnected from the world, in my experience at least.
Hence global-warming denialism is born, hence the absurd rapid rate of products going through the cycle bought-used-dumped, hence the expectation of always someone else getting rid of your waste, hence the disconnect from how people are dependent on the planet we live upon.

I have never understood the need to control the intimate lives of other people. I do not get the mindset of someone who wants gays to be jailed. There is some (twisted and inconsistent) logic to anti-abortion stance, but anti-gay stance? None at all. I like to think (probably wrongly) that without the sacred texts these homophobes derive their primitive deontological morality from, the world would be a much better place.
