The first baby was born at one of the Standing Rock camps earlier in the week. A woman’s healthcare center has been put together at the No DAPL camp, focusing on Indigenous ways regarding family, pregnancy, parenting, birthing, and childcare. There’s a video and transcript at Democracy Now.

I love the carrier/crib, reminds me of something I once saw in a storybook about the Sami people (here, from Sampo Lappellil (translated into English as Sammy and the Mountain King)).
(We had a Latvian translation, and it’s one of the books I brought over with me because I liked it so much -- not so much the christian-redemption theme, but everything up until the very end. Beautiful art.)

I didn’t realize Topelius was known outside Finland. I haven’t read or heard Sampo Lappalainen (Other stories by Topelius, yes, but not that one). For kids here Topelius was often referred to as “Satusetä Topelius” (fairytale-telling uncle Topelius, satu is saga or fairytale, also a popular woman’s name).

Ice Swimmer
When I was growing up, there was a Latvian-exile publishing company based in North America that would publish all kinds of foreign literature. They don’t publish anymore and they’re also not available here, one of the quirks of the diaspora. They had a whole collection of kids’ books I’d love to have now, I brought a couple over but I have a lot of siblings, so I can’t take them all. I’m not sure how known Topelius is here now, I haven’t actually seen any of his books re-published (and I go through All The Bookstores!!! on a regular basis).
Anyway, Sampo Lappellil was a favourite due to the art, and may I say Hiisii is one frightening mountain king. :/ (I actually had nightmares about him.)

I was relaying this story to my mother and she informed me she knows one of the midwives there and told me a bit about the people involved and what they’ve been doing with their clinic. I always forget how connected this world can be.
