Thank you for this!
I’ve seen the trailer and been wondering what Polynesian people think about it. (Turns out they’re people with diverse opinions, eh?)
Personally I liked the massive big agile god, but hey, I’m fat, right? Funny in how many ways representation works…

True. I don’t think that’s near the problem as is Disney’s habit of taking real people from various cultures and turning them into fantasy creations, and playing to stereotypes in doing that. That’s how really bad information spreads, and no actual education takes place.

Oh totally. I think this has the serious potential of being the motherhive of appropriation. Disney being Disney means they’re capable of almost everything, in all directions.
I hope the involvement of indigenous Polynesian actors saves it, yet I think that even a really good representation will fly over 95% of the viewers’ heads, being so rich and unfamiliar. In the end they will remember “exotic locations” and “songs”.
In the end it’s hard to judge from the trailer…

Patricia, do you listen to Indigie Femme?
Patricia Phillips says
I am not familiar with Indigie Femme but I will check it out.

The band is made up of two women, one Dine, the other Maori/Samoan. Their albums reflect both cultures.
