I was just realizing what an impact the character Spock had on my young life and probably others. I was too young to enjoy the series when it aired, but syndication did the trick. Spock was the first person on TV I can recall who made being a science “nerd” cool and being markedly different admirable.
What a legacy to leave. One man who did inspire millions and make our planet a better place :
“Leonard Nimoy was an inspiration to multiple generations of engineers, scientists, astronauts, and other space explorers,” NASA administrator Charles Bolden said in a statement. “As Mr. Spock, he made science and technology important to the story, while never failing to show, by example, that it is the people around us who matter most.”
Many space experts are also echoing Spock’s famous words — “live long and prosper” — in their tributes to the actor.
“Leonard, you lived long and prospered, and were an inspiration to me and to millions. Rest in peace,” Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield.”
According to one recent report on TV Nimoy died of COPD, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, possibly caused by years of smoking. I was unaware that he was a smoker.
This makes me hate the tobacco industry even more.
