The Romney reversal syndrome

It seems Mittens of Romney once gushed politically on a Salt Lake City mayor who opposed Iraq, proposed gay marriage, and wanted to impeach George W. Bush. And that’s not all. Romney proffered his praise on mayor Rockey Anderson even though the mayor was an active diarist on Daily Kos, AKA the Great Orange Satan. Those are just some of the tragic symptoms from the raging case of flip-flopitis afflicting Willard “Mitt” Romney, which helps explain why the wingnut base is pining for anyone, even clowns like Cain or Trump, over Mitt.

Romney’s contortions are legendary, on a women’s right to choose he’s been as supple as an Olympic gymnast and slicker than a sardine. When Romney ran against Ted Kennedy for Senate in 1994 in progressive Massachusetts, he didn’t just support a women’s right to choose in principle, he supported the legal foundation for it, “I believe that since Roe v. Wade has been the law for 20 years, that we should sustain and support it, and I sustain and support that law.” Romney added the same year “You will not see me wavering on that.”

Of course Romney has spent the last decade wavering, and he may have set a new all time wavering record just in the last few months : “I support the reversal of Roe v. Wade, because it is bad law and bad medicine. Roe was a misguided ruling that was a result of a small group of activist federal judges legislating from the bench.”

Now he’s taken that same polished skillset to the problem of climate change. Just last year Romney wrote in his book, No Apology, “I believe that climate change is occurring. … I also believe that human activity is a contributing factor. I am uncertain how much of the warming, however, is attributable to man and how much is attributable to factors out of our control.” But just this week he piped up that, “My view is that we don’t know what’s causing climate change on this planet. And the idea of spending trillions and trillions of dollars to try to reduce CO2 emissions is not the right course for us.”

The nickname Weathervane Mitt certainly fits. Which way will he point next month?

In 1972 Richard Nixon got great milage out of a TV spot showing a weather vane with George McGovern’s profile on it, turning this way and that.
I sense a remake in the works.

It depends on what he thinks the majority of his current audience wants to hear, of course.

Dear Mr. Romney: Thanks to modern mass communications, the majority of your current audience is the majority of the electorate. Trying to appeal to a relatively small bunch of wingnuts isn’t going to cut it.

Startle the shit out of the Tea Party, who are mostly creationists. Evolve a backbone.

(might not get him elected to President, but it’ll make him a more decent human being instead of a running gag.)
