Blog-a-Versary, 2018

Thanks for another year!

I’m not going to compile metrics this year, because I don’t think there’d be much difference. I notice I have shifted a few bits of focus here and there – realizing that Voltaire was an investor in slaves left a bad taste in my mouth and I started de-emphasizing him a bit. I’ve also noticed I’m de-emphasizing anarchism and the question of the legitimacy of the state; with Donald Trump in the White House there’s not really any need to question the legitimacy of the state.

This year I branched out and did some explainers on capitalism (those were great fun to write) and I spent much more time on metal-working than on soap-making and cooking. I feel like I need to do some recipes; I will try to fix that.

This year coming I hope to do more book reviews or movie reviews, but otherwise I will probably continue on in the same vein I have been. Any requests? I’m willing to hear suggestions like “please shut up about the police state” or “more muffin making recipes!” – I just don’t guarantee I’ll take them.

Thank you for being with me!

    Cheers.

Still reading, but not much about which I care to comment — I like controversy and disputation.

    Ah well.

Only a year? Feels like you have been here forever.
Keep writing and thanks for all the thought-fish.

Two years! Last year I “celebrated” with some metrics regarding the topics I posted. [stderr] Unfortunately, it took me several hours of manual compilation to categorize everything, so I won’t be doing that again.

Oh, maybe you could do a post on the metrics of your metric calculations. Time taken, how it was spent and so forth. You know, for those of us really keen on statistics, data processing, those kinds of things. Meta-metrics even have the potential for a dedicated series of posts.

P.S.: I’m experiencing intense déjà-vu right now so perhaps I ought to steer clear of meta-topics after all.

What you don’t know is that right now I am at a client site, working on a metrics project. My mission is to figure out what KPIs might be built out of all the data that is scattered in a dozen-odd silos, assuming that data is accurate, and to build out a system and practices to maintain and present those KPIs. Software-as-a-service and managed services are involved. Each of those has its own API, or console, or both. None, so far, have neither but I expect to find one of those eventually. So, I can tell you a meta-metric to make you happy: I have been spending 72% of my time tugging at my hair, 5% of my time squeezing my forehead, and 5% of my time staring at the wall; 10% “other” and 8% “unknown”. My current horror level is 50%. My metrics are in English units, not metric.

    Happy Blog-a-versary!
I enjoy it all, so more of the same is good and if it’s different that’s probably going to be good too.
