A man accepted a Facebook friend request from an attractive woman he had not known before and before long, after several messages were exchanged, got a request from her for a video chat and he agreed. After several failed attempts, they managed to connect and things quickly got hot and heavy.
He picked up a video call from the woman Sunday, and this time someone was on the other side. The woman, who was naked and lying face down, asked him to flash her his genitals on the video chat.
The man said he initially declined, but agreed to do so if the woman showed off her body to him. The woman did, and the man said he reciprocated.
So far, just another day in the world of internet sex. Then the man then got a message blackmailing him, demanding $10,000 in return for not releasing the video on social media.
Ok, so now it became an internet blackmail threat, similar to one particular Black Mirror episode.
Where it really goes off the rails is that the demand was for the money to be donated to an animal rights organization.
My reaction was: What? Is extortion a new form of charity fundraising? I am looking forward to hearing more about this.
Since the whole setup was a bunch of lies why would anyone believe the excuse?

The linked original story does not say which “animal rights organization” was suggested for this guy’s generosity.
But I’ve met a rather attractive young(ish) animalist (it’s a word now, okay?) crusader for whom all other ethical questions seem secondary, and can’t help but wonder if she’s brainstormed a new fiscal strategy. If so, she’s lost a bit of her targeting touch: how many 18-yos have a spare $10K on hand for embarrassment prevention -- and how much embarrassment pertains when so many of their peers are uploading the same and more to various social-media and porn platforms daily?

I don’t know anything about this case, but if someone was really trying to coerce donations to animal rights charities, I think they would deliberately try to target higher-ups at companies who make money off killing animals, raising animals for slaughter, or selling products that depend on the slaughter of animals (food, leather goods).
I’m not saying that would make it right, I’m saying that if your ethical system is that fucked up, wouldn’t you be going after your Great Satan and not some random 20 year old?
They’re requesting a donation to a charity for now…
