Those who try and change racist symbols and names like that of the Washington football team immediately come right up against that brick wall of the ‘It’s our tradition and as long as we think its not racist, it can’t be racist’ argument. I cannot afford to laugh at such ridiculous arguments because the people of Cleveland use that same argument to defend the racist Chief Wahoo baseball logo.
‘
One of the criticisms made of satirical programs like The Daily Show is that despite poking fun at people who defend racist symbols, they never succeed in actually achieving anything. Here they describe what happened when they tried to get the village of Whitesboro to change its racist seal.

I think the washington redskins should be named the washington “lobbyists”.
C’mon. It has a ring to it. It’s that or the “plutocrats”…
The sad thing is that enough people don’t care. If enough people cared, then all that the media would need to do is refuse to use the name, or to show anything with the name/logo until it was changed. It’d be, what, about 5 minutes?

@ ^ Marcus Ranum : How about the Washington Denzels?

Anyone reminded of South Park’s flag?
Marcus Ranum says
The Washington Denzels would be pretty funny. Even the Washington Marthas.
But why not keep it simple: The washington colonialists. The washington genociders. The washington imperialists.
Brony, Social Justice Cenobite says
Why not just “The Washington Racists”? It’s simple, to the point and probably cuts out a lot of stages of the arguing process. If it ends up in motivated reasoning territory one might as well get to the end stages faster since it saves energy.

@ ^ Brony, Social Justice Cenobite & Marcus Ranum : Because it’d be pretty hard to cheer on or see win any team with the names you suggested there? (Apart from Washington Martha’s -- could definitely cheer for them.)
Brony, Social Justice Cenobite says
@Stevo%
OK. I was looking at it in a different way because of all of the opposition to changing the name (something to call them despite the name they choose).

Just make it redskin potatoes!
Mascots don’t have to be tough. It’s kind of boring honestly.
