I’m not complaining about some history being erased

Minnesota recently got a snazzy new flag. It’s much nicer than the cluttered (and mildly racist) mess that was the old flag.

The Republicans don’t like the change, so they organized a rally at the capitol to complain.

“I’m wearing a T-shirt today that says, ‘Erasing history never goes well.’ And that’s what we believe is happening here,” Minnesota Republican Party Deputy Chair Donna Bergstrom said. “As a Native American and tribal member, it’s exhausting to see Native Americans once again bearing the brunt of the short-sighted eradication of our shared history.”

That’s the same complaint Republicans made about tearing down Confederate statues. I think that went pretty well, actually.

The bring-back-our-hideous-old-flag rally happened today. Look upon the horde and be awed!

I love how modern hogs have adopted left liberal social justice language, but they dont seem to understand what the words and concepts mean. As always conservatives only understand tone, like a dog.

Seems to me that history is being made not erased FWIW. Just a historic change of state symbol from worse to better. They haven’t banned flying the old flag have they? Also its not like people can’t look it up inthe books and judge for themselves which desin they prefer and why.

OT, but has anything been done to prevent further attacks on FTB like the three that it has now endured? E.g. a change of hosting provider, or moves in that direction?

Conservatives are the ones who want to erase history. They want to eliminate all references to historic figures who weren’t wealthy white Christian men. And part of their accusations against liberals is because they’re too unimaginative to come up with an accusation that they themselves aren’t doing, but another part of it is because accusing liberals of doing the thing that they’re doing makes liberal accusations against conservatives come across as “no, you.”

So Bergstrom‘s complaint is that they got rid of the stereotypical native American who happens to looks white and has long golden hair. You know it’s a native American because he…of course…is riding a horse, carries a spear, and has a feather in his hair. Hmmm.

Anyone know how other native Americans feel about this particular loss?

robro, since you asked, I now do after a quick clickety-click:

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2023/12/19/minnesota-new-state-flag-design/

The 174-year-old seal on the state’s current flag depicted a White settler plowing a field, a rifle leaning on a nearby tree stump, while an Indigenous man rides away on horseback.

Shelley Buck, a tribal leader, said that message was “very offensive for a Dakota woman.”

The seal and flag seemed to be “taking pride in driving my people from their homes,” said Buck, president of the Owamniyomni Okhodayapi river-restoration project and former leader of the Prairie Island Indian Community.

Buck was one of five Native American members of the 13-person commission that chose the flag design Tuesday. She said she wanted to ensure that it was “more inclusive, that it paid homage to the history of the state, that people felt good about it.”

I think it’s a great new flag! Good for you Minnesotans.
I live in a town in California named for a Confederate general and slaveholder. The long-time locals (the only ones who count, you know, because their great-great-grandfather…blah blah blah). White settlers, of course.

I’m on the local “Change the Name” committee. The same type of people are making the same claim: we’re “erasing history.” Somehow, they don’t count the 10,000+ years of indigenous who were already here.

And, for the record, they (and most of us until we did our research) had no idea about the origins of this California Fort Bragg (established to put down and enshackle the indigenous, not to protect the territory from foreign attack).

  8. John Morales says

ANB, good on ya. Stay sane!

I’ve taken minutes for committees, so I know somewhat of how it goes.

I reckon you should (if you haven’t yet) point out what StevoR noted @3:

Seems to me that history is being made not erased FWIW.

    Truth.

  9. mordred says

This accusation of erasing history is something I also notice here in Germany, for example about places and institutions named after people involved in Germany’s short but bloody colonial history . Usually from people who actually want to bury a certain part of Germany’s 20th century history.

These horrid, petty, bitter, evil-faced losers may not be “moral” or “silent” a majority any longer. even in their own…. minds, but they now are evidently an invisible one.

  11. birgerjohansson says

The previous flag was not in-yiur-face racist enough to get the MAGA crowd enthusiastic.
They might have had a bigger crowd if they had demonstrated in favor of introducing the old South Park flag.

No matter what flag you come up with people will complain forever about it replacing the old one. I still run across people online who want Canada to go back to the old Red Ensign as Canadian flag, despite the Maple Leaf flag being unmistakable as the flag of Canada. (The Union Flag, aka the Union Jack, was actually Canada’s official flag before the Maple Leaf, but mot people don’t realise that.)

Aren’t these the same assholes who erase LGBTQ and PoC’s history….?

Yes, as well as the US Civil War which they call the War of Northern Aggression.

They complain endlessly of Black History week or day or month.
Why isn’t there a month for White History then?
Answer, There is. White History week(s) are the other 51 weeks of the year.

  14. antigone10 says

I don’t love the new design, but I’ll get used to it. It’s sure a heck of a lot better than the old one. I suspect that the vast majority of people in MN feel the same way.

  15. Alverant says

Tearing down Confederate statues does not erase history. All it does is stop honoring pro-slavery traitors.
