The Washington Post featured this messy caricature of the 147 Republicans who opposed the election of Joe Biden, and are now trying to get re-elected, in spite of their opposition to democracy. I don’t care for it.
There were 147 members of Congress who supported at least one objection to counting Biden’s electoral votes on Jan. 6, 2021. From that group, this piece highlights those who are still in government and who have declared that they will be running for federal office in 2024, or who have not yet announced, as of publication date.
The problem is that it exaggerates the surly, nasty, hateful expressions of each individual to the point that they are unrecognizable. I stared at this image for a long time trying to figure out who was who, and just couldn’t do it. At least the article provides a labeled key, which in this case is absolutely essential.
For instance, here’s my state representative, Michelle Fischbach.
If all you knew was the caricature, would you recognize her walking down the street? I don’t think so. Even familiar, easily cartoonish people like Cruz and Green are harder to identify than they should be.
Sure, it accurately captures the spirit of the person — Fischbach is a nasty regressive Catholic culture warrior — but a caricature should at least give us a hint of the physicality of the figure being mocked, or it’s going to miss every time.

I dunno, I think the likeness for Stefanik is pretty good, although it is difficult to fully capture her odious cynicism and self-serving nature.
In fairness to the cartoonist, maybe they’re making the point that the Repug party itself has become an unrecognisable caricature of the worst of itself?
Hate to be cynical, but, The WP is not what it was 50 years ago, and I wonder if this cartoon is a deliberate attempt to not have the faces recognisable, because we wouldn’t want to be biased or annoy Republicans?
Can’t really blame anyone for not wanting to annoy Republicans, given the sheer volume of death threats issued when they’re even mildly annoyed.
Indeed, with the latest round of threats is denial of those threats, denial of anyone being charged with making said threats, etc. It’s as if they cannot even see the headlines announcing guilty verdicts and protracted sentences.
The caricature represents the “inner truth” of its subjects, maybe.
And I find it unlikely Noah Lugeons would be within a million miles of this crowd. But it would be fun if an almost naked Eli Bosnick had shown up in that hall.
I see my so-called representative Smucker (PA) looks like a toad in the cartoon. I like it!

I’m glad there was a key to identify these legislators. But I think Brodner characterizes these people vividly and accurately. They have no good side or facets. They are just nasty assholes.

Matt Gaetz is probably the most obvious one, that jumped out at me as soon as I looked at the image.

I do not recognise any of them.
Even if I had seen photographs of most of those freaks, I would not have been able to identify them. There are only a few loud-mouth motherfuckers that make themselves known. Brodner is just the best at depicting Republican pricks. He always has been.

Except there’s a key provided in order to identify them and drawing them looking so utterly awful as well as so bad they are barely if at all recognisable seems more likely to piss them off not less.
Seems Steve Brodner has captuired theri uinner ulginess neatly if not their familair external appearance.
I notice they’ve centred the Republicans’ one black friend in an attempt to imply some degree of ethnic diversity. On the other hand, it does seem that the three basic Republican skin tones are all well represented – white, orange and gammon.
@17 Sure, but most people wouldn’t bother looking at the key, and the faces are mostly not recognisable, whereas a photo montage would be. Perhaps an unworthy suspicion, perhaps not.
Chigau, I’m Canadian too and while I do pay above average attention to US politics it still seems like one would have to work hard to avoid learning about the likes of Matt Gaetz, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and Lauren Boebert.
