I know we’re all ready to read this sign as extremely creepy, but it’s probably just badly worded. The problem that they have is that there is a discrepancy between most things that are considered “adult” and for which anyone 18 or older is counted as one, like marriage, voting, serving in the military, etc., and drinking, which they are not considered adult enough for. For that you must be 21. So there is a point here where you could have a 20 year old married to a 22 year old (not really creepy) but the 20 year old is still considered under age to be at the bar without their 22 year old spouse. The sign should probably say “a spouse of legal drinking age” to be properly accurate, but that’s also a bit long to fit on a sign. I kind of doubt that the Applebees meant anything more than that or that they are endorsing child marriage.
Of course, we do have the ridiculous situation where a person otherwise considered an adult is barred from legally consuming alcohol, but that’s not their fault.

Old enough to be married & have babies, not old enough to drink
Here’s another way to think of that: if you can legally marry and start having babies at 18, but can’t legally drink until you’re 21, then that means — in the eyes of the law at least — that your first three years of married life must be alcohol-free.
