Mano Singham has a news item about a high-profile shaman in Sri Lanka who offered blessed water to prevent/cure covid.
You can never guess what happened to him!
Oglivie is a victim of an alliance between a killer meme and a killer virus. The meme spreads the misinformation that helps the virus spread, and the virus creates the uncertainty that the meme exploits.
Hey, I sorry I was so insanely angry at you in that last post. It’s that I am so sick of the Right that I can’t see a way out of our political reality that doesn’t end in militarized violence.
Also,I just can’t make myself care for the health and happiness of the religious and/or the capitalist. Both theism and capitalism have fucked this world up beyond repair. I really want to see capitalists and theists (regardless of ideological affiliation) suffer for their crimes.

Taking you entirely seriously, I myself think circumstances and trends allow for it, but not that it’s inevitable. So yeah, I can’t really criticise either your apprehension of the situation or your feelings; only their expression.
FWIW, consider, say, the last election. Trump.
In the end, the system of checks-and-balances (and the inertia from functionaries in general) prevailed. No longer in charge.
Two ways to look at it:
1) It was only just thwarted, so the next time they’ll improve and succeed.
2) It was unthinkable (outside the people who thought it), but it was still thwarted, so the next time it shan’t be a surprise (and will see it coming), being thus forewarned.
I think (2) is more plausible than (1), but mileage might vary — I sure could be wrong.

Hm There’s a van Vogt, Heinlein, Pournelle (and similar) storyline there.

Strangely, the TtDB character is “Oglivie,” not Ogilvie. Seems like an intentionally quirky spelling on Bolling’s part, though I’m not sure why. Whatever his reason, everyone seems to be overlooking the spelling.

Maybe it has something to do with a 1970s-80s baseball player? (This seems sort of plausible for Bolling.)
