Also, my condolences to The Vicar, for getting an administration that will be far from perfect, but that may not be actively trying to kill as many people as possible.

    @Pierce #3:

Where – speaking of less-than-one termers – is JFK?

Oh, it’s OK, don’t worry. He’s living the good life with many other ex-presidents, on a farm upstate.

    What?! Too soon?

  3. jenorafeuer says

As far as JFK is concerned, I’d guess the person who created this only cared about presidents who served one term and then lost the next election, as opposed to presidents who died before getting to the next election.

Then again, I’m not an American, and I don’t recognize most of the ones there who weren’t within my lifetime.

Don’t feel bad. We had to study these guys in school and I still can’t name most of the guys with the beards and muttonchops.

We need another circle for “survived right up to the moment a wooden stake was hammered into his chest”.
And I am afraid his head will just separate and carry on on its own like in The Thing.

Rich Woods @ # 4 & raven @ # 6 – yabbut which one has to get up early to milk the cows?

jenorafeuer @ # 5 – You may have that right, since the picture also omits deliberate one-termer James K. Polk. But I don’t see Millard Fillmore in there either – he tried to run for re-election in 1852, but failed to win his party’s nomination, so he counts as something of an in-betweener.

  7. birgerjohansson says

Televangelist Kenneth Copeland had some kind of breakdown during a sermon because he could not process his idol had lost the election. It is creepy to watch the clip, he is due for a room at Arkham Asylum.

  8. robro says

The criteria for one-term presidents isn’t clear. That group includes Gerald Ford who was not elected (appointed VP to complete Spiro Agnew’s second term) and did not serve a full term as president. Also, it doesn’t include James Buchanan.

robertbaden @ #10 — Not sure of your question, but Carter is on the upper-left under Martin Van Buren.

  9. Mark Tilford says

Hayes was a one-term president. Cleveland was a two-term president.

Maybe the left bubble should be “Defeated when running for re-election”; Hayes didn’t run for a second term; Cleveland was defeated in his first run for a second term (he served non-consecutive terms).

  10. flange says

Trump still has two more months in office. We must count on him now inflicting as much suffering as he can.
Shouldn’t the 25th Amendment be used on a lame-duck president? I hope someone has enough balls to get the ball rolling.

  11. Nemo says

Shouldn’t the 25th Amendment be used on a lame-duck president?

What, automatically? No, that’s silly. Just amend out the gap if you want that.

On this guy? Yes, it should’ve been used long since. January 21, 2017 at the latest.

  12. christoph says

@raven, # 6: You must have seen “Bubba Ho-Tep,” with Bruce Campbell as Elvis and Morgan Freeman as JFK.

  13. Artor says

Christoph, that was not Morgan Freeman. It was Ossie Davis. (but really JFK.)
In a magazine article rating the various Elvises on film, Elvis Presley came in second after Bruce Campbell’s depiction.

I’m just saying, why not do it NOW? There may be more support for it.

    @#1, Giliell:

Biden is going to have Dick Cheney as a foreign policy advisor, and the head of his transition team says he’s going to be pushing austerity again (but not, as usual, for military spending). He has indicated he wants to return to the Good Old Days of military intervention in the global south for the benefit of corporations.

So no, we are still going to have an administration trying to kill the largest number of people possible, just with different target groups. But since you’re apparently a white liberal, you personally won’t be effected so you can go back to pretending everything is okay like you did under Obama and Clinton (but not under Bush or Trump).

  19. says

    @24 Vicar
    you personally won’t be effected
    “affected” not “effected”.
Sorry Vic, I can’t resist needling you a bit when you get so worked up.

  20. Rob Grigjanis says

The Vicar @24: You pathetic piece of shit. Some idiot on twitter says that CNN reports Biden saying that (can you link to the CNN report?), and you are either stupid enough to believe it without question, or as unprincipled a liar as Trump. Either way, you have no standing to lecture anyone, and zero credibility.

And since we all know you’ll be back spouting the same sort of verbal diarrhoea for as long as you can type, it’s also clear you have no sense of shame.

    Keep digging, sunshine.

Vicar’s a twisted, spineless wanker whose best efforts are spewing poision in the comment sections of blogs. If I’m wrong, Vicar, please regale us with your prodigious history of committed activism. (My best bet is crickets.)

  22. says

Hey, Vicar, what colour is the sky on your planet? You know, the one where everybody here was claiming that things were wonderful under Obama, and where I’m apparently American. Because on this planet, the 300.000 people killed by Covid in the USA also won’t affect n me. I further didn’t know that the Latinx babies in concentration camps were privileged fuckers who apparently deserve what they got for voting Democrat. I must further point out your horrible racism of dismissing all the black people and Latinx people celebrating in b the streets, as if they didn’t know exactly what a Biden vs Trump administration means to them. Not to forget the LGBTQ community…

  23. birgerjohansson says

Stephen King has a way with words.
“…Stephen King, the famed novelist and an avowed Democrat, was even more blunt in his proclamation. “You lost, you miserable self-entitled infantile fucker,” King declared. “Concede and get the hell out.”

PZ can you please ban The Vicar? They have nothing to say and yet repeatedly say it at length.

Yes. There’s a coup in the making. Though there have also been signs from Republicans to accept the results. I think there’s a power struggle going c on there as well.

  27. logicalcat says

    #40:

I’m afraid Vicar will leave you hanging. They don’t have the intellectual courage to defend their stance, only enough to assert it.

  29. Anton Mates says

    The Vicar @24,

He has indicated he wants to return to the Good Old Days of military intervention in the global south for the benefit of corporations.

I’m sorry, “return to”? Did you think the last four years have been some sort of paradise of US military non-intervention? You do know that Trump ramped up our bombing rate in Afghanistan? You do remember us openly murdering Iran’s #2 politician with a drone strike at Baghdad International Airport?
You do remember that Yemen and Somalia exist?

No one here confuses Biden with a pacifist–personally, I’m guessing he’ll be a warmonger on roughly the same scale as Bill Clinton. But on what grounds do you think that Biden will be more destructive than Trump would be, or more committed to naked corporate greed? Biden was always a voice within the Obama administration for reducing US military presence in the Middle East, often to his political detriment. Most of the hawkish neoliberals blame him for pulling us out of Iraq too fast and enabling the rise of ISIL.

But since you’re apparently a white liberal,

Vicar, I have no idea what you look like, but you sound like the most stereotypically white male American poster on this board. Nothing seems to matter to you within the Democratic platform except for economics and foreign policy. You hate Hillary Clinton so very much and so personally, when her support among women and people of color has fairly consistently kept her as the most admired woman in America (bar, recently, Michelle Obama) for the last thirty years. You constantly claim that the Democratic party has alienated the “working class”, when every poll and every election result demonstrates that the working class is fine with the Dems; it’s the white working class that is alienated, and it’s because their whiteness predicts their political alignment more strongly than their income. You constantly complain that the Democratic party has betrayed the labor movement, yet rarely observe that the white labor movement repeatedly betrayed workers of color first.

I believe that you’re committed to the interests of the working class. I believe that you’re committed to the interests of people in the Global South. But I don’t think you have a good understanding of what they believe their own interests to be.

So no, we are still going to have an administration trying to kill the largest number of people possible, just with different target groups.

…and now I’m not sure you know what “largest” means. Do you expect Biden to initiate wars in the Global South on the scale that, say, George W. Bush did? Do you expect Biden to follow a health care policy that kills as many Americans, as quickly, as Trump’s response to the pandemic is doing? If so, why?
