You know what to do. Get out there and vote.
I’m going to be squeezing in a long day working as an election judge at my local polling place (and I’m hoping that I will be very, very busy with a large turnout), in addition to taking care of teaching. If it’s a little quiet around here, don’t worry — it’s just that today is the culmination of a lot of anxious agonizing.
At the very least, I’ll be back online after the polls close. Until then, tell us about your voting experiences — may they all be routine and boring.
Congratulations America! :)
tsg [481], look at http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/results/president/
There’s a sign at the top that shows electoral college votes, percentage of votes, and number of votes: currently it’s Obama 174 to McCain 64.
I’m live-blogging it at Science Notes, with occasional diagrams. Tomorrow we can all get back to science.
Right there with you, but it’s cheese eating left coast monkeys…
USA “centre-right” is roughly “screaming near-fascist” in European terms; USA “centre-left” might approximate to “centre-right social-democratic” for us.
Rev,you were right…
VA 50:49 now,with only 20000 or so votes apart…
Its going to be a f__ing landslide.
Its what we call a spring cleaning over here, you guys are well and truly cleaning up the house and taking out the garbage tonite !!
The first two non Kerry states have just been called for Obama, New Mexico and O H I O !.
So, we’re already at 277 !
So HE IS FOR SURE !100% THE WINNER !
OBAMA IS PRESIDENT !
neg,
Who’s calling those? BBC still has him on 175.
MSNBC just called Ohio for Obama.
No kings,
Robert
Neg where are you getting your numbers from?
What source?
FOX NEWS !
no kidding
AND THEY almost CALLED OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT from the tip of the lips….
NBC is notoriously early in their calls, but the writing is on the wall.
The best place to follow the election is by far pollster.com, you get all the results from all the networks live and updated
Ah, BBC now projects Ohio for Obama! Still only on 195, but that’s it. Congratulations!!!!
CNN showing West Virginia in for McCain, and MSNBC projecting New Mexico for Obama.
No kings,
Robert
Yeah, I have CNN, CBS, NBC and ABC open. I just thought it odd that Fox wasn’t giving Electoral totals.
I made a comment a few weeks ago and had my ass handed back to me by truth and a few others.
Thanks for the slap in the face.
I mailed my vote in last week and I voted Obama.
First time I voted Democrat. Sarah Palin was the last straw among many short comings.
Obama just won Ohio.
Come on, it’s over now, Obama is already with 277 electoral votes, what are you waiting for ?
Vive le président des Etats Unis d’Amérique Barack Obama !
Come on you guys what are you waiting for to celebrate, there’s no reason anymore to be fearful for anything.
It’s done !
Congratulations to all Americans
.
youpiiiii !
***sound of Cork from champagne bottle***
Michigan looks damn close at the moment.
Well on the way to 350 electoral votes.
Funny how the networks dont call it yet to keep their viewers interested, when its all over.Campbell Brown is tempted to call it tho,you can tell LOL
Florida,Virginia and even potentially Indiana, which we dont need anymore anyway, are also looking very good.
Rick, hang around. The Machine is harsh but generally accurate; I’d even say “fair.” Maybe learn something? Why not?
And there are some pretty funny people here, too.
negentropyeater,
My champagne bottle in Hebden Bridge says hello to yours!
BBC is reporting from all over the place that Rethug “celebration” parties are very, very sad places to be.
Sorry to disapoint, but all the networks have called Michigan for Obama already.
How are they going to sell their ad blocks if they call it already now so early ?
I mean he’s guaranteed won already :
Kerry states = 252 (the only two that were in play were Penn and NH and they have already been called for Obama)
+ NM + OH = 277
Done
The rest, Indana, Virginia, Florida, Iowa, Missouri etc… are just gravy.
The thicker the better, but it won’t change the name of the president.
Yes it is all but over, but I don’t like jumping the gun.
However i am staying up to see just how large a margin it is.
lets hope the popular vote isn’t close. We can be pretty sure the Electoral vote won’t be.
Damn it, I’m feeling hopeful!
And that’s very, very unusual for me.
Talk about gravy…
Obama has pulled ahead in Virginia !
7000 votes behing in Indiana.
Reporting from Austin:
MSNBC is calling Texas for McCain, which is not a surprise.
Still, the national picture is looking like a beautiful thing.
No kings,
Robert
CNN hasn’t called Texas yet (and yes, I’m surprised even though I voted Obama here)
Nah texas is for sure Repub.
but really, he only has to carry Cali (check) and washington or cali, OR and one other.
He’s in there. Now we really want him to carry traditionally, at least recently, republican NC and VA.
What is perhaps ominous is the regional divide: the old slave states, the Confederacy, look like staying Rethuglican. Comments?
Yeah,Texas is gone,but who cares anymore….
538 has Obama at 353 electoral votes, and they have been scarily accurate all night.
Hell,even Al Franken is ahead…
2pm and Im drunk, what am I going to do the rest of the day?
Nick,
not really a surprise. I live in SC and we knew that would happen. Check the numbers after and compare to 2004 or 2000. You’ll see a progression.
NC and VA are still up for grabs.
The Machine is harsh but generally accurate; I’d even say “fair.” – Sven DiMilo
“Vicious but fair”, like Dinsdale Piranha?
Hmm, on second thoughts, maybe more like his brother Doug:
“Everyone was terrified of Doug. I’ve seen grown men
pull their own heads off rather than see Doug. Even Dinsdale was frightened of Doug. He used… sarcasm. He knew all the tricks, dramatic irony, metaphor, bathos, puns, parody, litotes and… satire.”
In Canada, you are entitled to four hours off work to vote. Most people don’t take it, but it’s there in case things get slow.
Just heard Erica Jong talking to one of our best-known anchors on the radio, saying, much to his obvious embarrassment, that Bush had been POTUS only through fixed elections. Actually she mentioned three fixed elections. 2000 and 2004, but what was the third?
Knew Texas was eventually going to go down, was just surprised it took so long.
Spiny Norman for President!
Fox News just called Virginia for Obama
And Florida should be comming any moment soon…
I got in a little after 10 AM and there was NO line at all. Asked the guy if it was the right place. :-D My housemate got there early and had to wait an hour. Said he got a round of applause when they announced he was a first-time voter. He hasn’t voted in almost 30 years!
Finally, it looks like America got it right.
#536
I was amazed. It was much closer in Texas than I thought it would be!
Haha… maybe my vote did matter…
As soon as the polls close on the west coast, they’ll call California, Oregon and Washington and it will be all over but the shouting.
You will like this … AZ polls open at 6AM. I arrived about 5:45, there were about 50 people in line (not unusual for that precinct) and asked the guy at the front of the line when he had arrived.
He was there at 5AM, to make sure he was first in line. The young man (black, southern accent) was eligible to vote for the first time in a presidential election and wanted to make sure that the first vote in the precinct went to Obama.
That’s it, Fox News has called Obama the winner
of the 2008 presidential election,
So dd all other networks at the same time, they waited for polls to close in CA.
BBC now has Obama on 297 – including Virginia. Phew! Best night (politically speaking) I can remember. Real hope for the world. Well done guys, well done! Now (at 04.05 here), I must go to bed!
Actually – I must stay up until I’ve heard Obama’s victory speech! Probably no more here though.
Well crap. Congratulations to the Democrat Party and our new President elect Obama.
I hope I was wrong about Obama.
We’ll see.
Lurkbot, looking good at the moment, even without us…
It does look good–couldn’t be happier! Watching Obama’s speech: why does it strike me as so unusual that Obama and Biden actually seem to like each other? Weird?
Well done America! You’ve made the right choice, now let’s hope he can actually do the job. Of course I’m sure he’ll do a better job than the other guys, but he’s got a lot of challenges on his plate. I hope he spends his time before the handover doing a lot of research so he can make the right decisions.
I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don’t know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.
