I’ve had some sort of stomach bug today – this is the first time I’ve been able to look at a screen long enough for a paragraph, so this is all the writing I’m doing today. In the meantime, here’s some info on abortion and “safe state” laws
We shall see how the “States’ Rights über alles!” crowd reacts to this development.

Remember, one reason the loser states declared war on the north was over states’ rights. The loser states wanted the states rights to keep slaves, but if the slaves escaped to the north, they wanted the north to return the slaves. The north said (paraphrasing): “Nuh-uh, our states’ rights say we don’t have to!”
And the losers declared war on them, lost, and have not stopped lying and whining about it. And also insisting “states rights mean we can do whatever we want but you have to do everything we say”. Abuse.

Also, this deserved its own comment: hope you’re recovering from your stomach bug and will be totally fine tomorrow.

And to get to the point of your post, Just last week I had a shocking conversation with someone I thought was sane. He trotted out the “abortion is not in the Constitution” lame excuse, and during the course of the discussion, it became obvious that he (a self-proclaimed libertarian) simply did not care that woman will die for lack of medical care, just like Savita Halappanavar in Ireland…and he simply did not care, because he’s not married and doesn’t like his sister, and as a matter of fact, considers himself a MGTOW.
Thanks, Katydid. So far today is going better. Fingers crossed.
And yeah, I’ve had a few moments where I realized that someone who I had respected at least a little basically just came out and announced that things like fascism don’t bother them if it doesn’t directly affect them.
I guess it’s part of really internalizing the lesson that “it” can happen everywhere – all it requires is the right conditions.

Yeah, when someone you have a benign relationship suddenly shows their true colors, it’s astounding. During the conversation, this man announced “it wasn’t FAIR!” that women “got to” get time off after having a baby (but was silent when asked if it “wasn’t FAIR!” if men got time off after a major medical event such as heart surgery).
I also reminded him of a woman we both know, who had a textbook, uneventful pregnancy…until she didn’t. In the course of a day she went from “fine” to “in a coma in multiple organ failure” and the only thing that saved her life was to end the pregnancy–which was far enough along that there was a viable baby. Both survived, but it was a lot of time and heartbreak before both thrived.
I reminded him that under the new laws, both mother and baby would have to die. His response was that was sad, but that happens.
To summarize; the man who threw a jealous fit and insisted that some stranger to him who might get time off to recover from a major medical event was somehow gaining something over him because she was a woman, would happily accept a woman he knows dying from a preventable cause.
Lots of misogyny out there, not always so obvious. And if Roe is allowed to fall, it will be because a lot of men hate women.
