From the Temple of Bel to the West Gate

Wikipedia on The Great Colonnade at Palmyra:

The Great Colonnade at Palmyra was the main colonnaded avenue in the ancient city of Palmyra in the Syrian Desert. The colonnade was built in several stages during the second and third century CE and stretched for more than a kilometer. It linked the Temple of Bel, in the southeastern end of the city, to the West Gate and the Funerary Temple in the northwestern part. As of May 2015, the area is under the control of the Islamic State.

Is there anything more depressing than a people willfully destroying their own heritage and history? Even bad history should be retained, remembered, and studied, like the history of slavery in the USA. Destroying a proud history of ancient civilization makes absolutely no sense.

The Christians started destroying ancient cultures and civilizations in about 400AD and the violence didn’t stop until a few hundred years ago. Let’s hope the Muslims don’t last quite so long. Trouble is, the hoi polloi are shit scared they’ll miss out on a trip to heaven if they protest too loudly – so they’ll just sit back and watch while their civilization is destroyed.

I think they’re probably also somewhat concerned that they might end up making said trip rather earlier than planned – and with good reason.
