Just have time for a quick one today.
So I saw this bumper sticker that said “God’s love never fails,” as though that were some kind of supernatural, awe-inspiring power. But really there’s nothing to it. The reason God’s love never “fails” is because nothing that happens ever counts as a failure on His part. Sure, He allegedly knew all about the 9/11 attacks before they happened, and could easily have warned somebody in time to prevent them, save thousands of lives, and prevent at least two wars—but His failure to do so isn’t officially failure. Children starve to death every day, but His failure to feed them (when He could easily do so) doesn’t count as failure. The world is full of cripples and disabled people and people dying of horrible diseases, whom He could all easily heal, but His failure to do so has to be blamed on someone or something else, because it’s not His failure, by definition.
So you can count on God’s love: when God loves you, the worst that can happen is, well, literally the worst that can happen. But at least it won’t be His fault when it does. Comforting thought, eh?

Also, the old testament is filled to the brim with god’s unconditional love, right?

…And you will know His love by the fact that sometimes good things happen, sometimes bad things happen, sometimes really good things happen, and sometimes really bad things happen. Occasionally something wonderful or horrible will happen, but mostly something completely neutral will happen. Occasionally nothing will happen.
PROOF!

I too get sick and tired of seeing bumper stickers that say things like: “God’s love never fails” or “Prayer changes things”, etc. It’s all mushy feel-good nonsense.
God doesn’t prevent children from starving in Africa. He doesn’t prevent floods or droughts. He doesn’t heal the sick. He doesn’t do squat but yet people believe in him & say how “wonderful” he is. Proof please!
And when God doesn’t prevent some catatrophe believers will say stupid things like: “God works in mysterious ways” or “God will cause some good to come from this.” Yeah–right. I wish people would grow up & stop believing in fairy tales.

And if you die and wake up in an eternal, unending torment of unendurable fire, well, that’s just His love shining on you.
But not His fault.

Yeah, we just fail to be lovable enough. Awesome. /sarcasm

“God’s love never fails” is ludicrous by our definition of love, but it fits right in with what the RWAs mean by love. For the RWAs, love (like everything else) is hierarchical and involves ownership/submission depending on whether you’re looking up or down the hierarchy. By the RWA definition, God/husband/father demonstrate their “love” by “disciplining” people/wife/child and people/wife/child demonstrate their “love” by submitting joyfully to whatever crap is handed out to them from their “loving” owner.
