Sadly, what it’s swimming in is white bread. No matter how many signs you put up, telling people that feeding bread to the ducks and fish and muskrats is bad for them, some people always know better, or think that when they do it it’s different. Which explains a lot about the current shit we’re in.

I bet one of my hair remover/polishers would work great for buffing up the odd muskrat. And they’d appreciate it more than gooey bread.

A friend was visiting Yellowstone National Park and was at the Old Faithful geyser when she saw a woman feeding ground squirrels -- right in front of a sign that said “Do Not Feed The Squirrels”. She explained to the woman that she should not feed the squirrels, and the woman asked why not? My friend explained that the squirrels could be sick and could possibly bite the woman, and she responded indignantly, “Then why did they let them out?!” Some people just do not understand that the world is not a giant petting zoo. They live in some kind of alternate reality where things go the way they *think* they should and not according to the way things really happen in the real world.
I had a similar experience to Kestrel’s friend in Yellowstone. We were camping and at a breakfast a herd of bison was casually grazing through the campground. The woman of the couple camped next to us carefully kept their car between the herd and herself and indicated to her husband that that was a prudent course of action. He of course responded “if it was dangerous they wouldn’t let them do that.”
That cute you photographed is considered a dangerous pest where I live for which there is a sustained campaign to at least try to contain their numbers seeing that eradication doesn’t seem likely even in the distant future.
That said bringing feed, whatever type, for the birds is not just bad for the birds. It also attracts vermin and other pests with the leftovers. Leftovers which tend to also pollute the water.
Who Cares
Yeah, they’re not native here either, but since we only got thy type of dykes that hangs out in awesome bars, not the kind that stops the sea from eating us all (though I think CD may be capable of both), they’re not too problematic.

Yeah, that kind of people, who think and expect every part of the world to be safely accessible for them. FFS, a bison isn’t a sheep! I think that#s the same kind of people who then scale barriers claiming that if the people who put them up didn’t want people to climb them they should have made them higher…
Looks like you have some adorably photogenic, outdoor ‘pets’ to keep things interesting. Its whiskers make it look wise and goofy all at the same time. Those are fabulous photos.
