I love seeing the kids in full regalia, there’s just so much STUFF on them, and they make it come alive! (I mean, everyone does. But the kids are so CUTE!)
I love the neon colors in some of the roaches, it makes a cool contrast to the natural hair (or is it fur, I don’t know).
The kids are darn cute, and I imagine very proud and excited to show their skill and finery.
I have never been to a pow wow, but you’ve piqued my interest. I looked to see what happens in my area and there’s one in San Francisco, the Bay Area American Indian Two Spirit pow wow. I’m definitely going in 2017.

Agreed. Unfortunately, a lot of white people would see these and confuse honoring and maintaining tradition, with ‘primitive’.
Regarding kids and dancing. Completely different culturally, but there are a lot of kids I know who work at renfaires. They learn many traditional dances (one group does Morris, Russian, and Siberian). One of the most entertaining things I got to witness a few years back was a young lady (9-10 years old) who some 30 something white guy called cute and asked in an incredibly insulting tone if she knew the names of the dances or just ‘jumped along’ with the grown ups. This (scary smart) young lady proceeded to school him on the history of several different cultures, and what their dance traditions meant. She was totally deadpan and respectful as if he was really interested, but she talked to him like he was an inquisitive child, and asked several times if she needed to slow down.
It was a thing of beauty. Never underestimate kids. :)
I need to go to the Tohono O’odham ceremony this year…..
