A powerful picture.
To illustrate just how little there is to protect the soil and water, the photo in this Think Progress feature will give an idea.
Lest we forget, the company building the poisonous pipeline, Energy Transfer Partners, owns Sunoco and Phillips 66 is a partner in the pipeline project.
Yes, Iowa farmers and land owners are fighting, but it’s not looking good, the courts are ignoring them, telling them they waited too late. Sunoco stations are all over the place here, too.

Looks like I didn’t state my thoughts explicitly, leaving the text with insufficient information about my point. That little to protect was supposed to be about the pipe material used in the pipeline. Looks like there’s just a relatively thin layer of steel and some paint or plastic coating to separate the oil from soil and water. A single point of failure more than a thousand miles (1800 km) long.
Ice Swimmer, I understood, and yes, it’s a major issue. The oil that is going to be transported is some of the dirtiest oil to date, and there’s no good tech to clean this nasty isht up once it spills, and it will spill, it will leak all over the place. That’s more than obvious, as you point out. The ACoE keeps saying how safe it is, blah, blah, blah, but it isn’t, and they haven’t implemented anything at all to shore up their claim of “safer”.
The Army definition of “safe” could be: “There’s 50 % chance you won’t die immediately.”
Hey, let’s not go overboard with these ‘demands’.
Those rich white people are just asking for access to their ridiculously huge profit margins.
I mean really, how can you compare something like safe, clean water, to their stock dividends?!?!
