Donald Trump touched on his thoughts about Jesus Christ Wednesday by saying Jesus is “somebody I can totally rely on,” particularly for “security and confidence” as he enters the general election phase of the race.
Trump also told Cal Thomas in an interview posted Wednesday that he doesn’t plan on asking for forgiveness from God too much going forward, even though he does plan on asking for it on occasion.
“Every president has called upon God at some point. Lincoln spoke of not being able to hold the office of the presidency without spending time on his knees,” Thomas told Trump. “You have said you never felt the need to ask for God’s forgiveness, and yet repentance for one’s sins is a precondition to salvation. I ask you the question Jesus asked of Peter: Who do you say He is?”
“I will be asking for forgiveness, but hopefully I won’t have to be asking for much forgiveness,” Trump said, before talking up his relationships with clergymen and evangelicals more broadly. “I’m going to treat my religion, which is Christian, with great respect and care.”
Thomas then repeated his initial question, asking “who do you say Jesus is?” The question stems from the Gospel.
“Jesus to me is somebody I can think about for security and confidence,” Trump said. “Somebody I can revere in terms of bravery and in terms of courage and, because I consider the Christian religion so important, somebody I can totally rely on in my own mind.”
I really didn’t need yet another reason to seriously dislike Trump, especially in high office, but I got one anyway.

Any normal christian would have said that Jesus is their lord and savior. So Trump’s answer is about as atheistic as it is possible for an American candidate to say.
So I’m glad the a Republicans are now effectively repudiating Christianity, from what would be their perspective. But I say we still need to campaign against Trump, because he would appoint many party hack Jesus freaks to all positions.

Figures.
“He that is not with me
Is against me” was his teaching
Said Jesus, “I am the answer

“He that is not with me
Is a Muslim or Mexican” was his ranting
Said Trump, “I am the answer

Since we are going to be reliant on Jesus for security, we should be able to slash the military budget and use that money to fund the (most awesome) healthcare program that you have alluded to, correct?

Jesus clearly whispered in trump’s ear to spend up handsomely on biiiiig pointy toys when he gets into power.

How do you do, fellow kids?
Do you think they buy that? Whether it’s a genuine statement of faith (snnrk) or transparent and inept pandering to his base doesn’t really matter because he’d be terrible either way (unless, I guess, he’s going to be all “I fooled you -- I got democrat iron! I got all democrat iron!” and this whole “raging bigot” thing has been a long con) but… heh, he’s about as convincing with that statement of faith as… a very unconvincing thing. #winningatcomparisons

Dude, if Jesus showed up today he’d turn over your table and whip you out of the temple. Assuming he could get into the US what with the profiling and all.
sonofrojblake says
How many rabbis have had any trouble getting into the US? Has Trump mentioned stopping them?
dianne says
@8: I guess you missed the whole ((())) thing?
sonofrojblake says
I missed the bit where it affected immigration policy, certainly.
dianne says
Yep. Because Trump’s antisemitism would never spill over into his immigration policy or for that matter his policy on how he treats citizens. And people in the US are absolutely never mistake one Middle Eastern looking person for another. I’m sure Jesus wouldn’t get profiled at all.

No, not at all. Why all the profiling is ever so accurate, gosh, it stopped Yusuf Islam!

@12: Thus saving the US from some dangerous folk singing. A triumph of modern security theater! Right up there with the observant passenger who saved that one flight from the evils of a procrastinating economist!
Actually, that last one scared the crap out of me since my partner is a dark haired astronomer who often finishes his talks on his way to conferences. Note that he works on galaxy formation and his slides often do contain images of extreme violence, i.e. stars blowing up, galaxies collapsing…

I can understand why. That’s the same reaction a lot of people had to that incident, because they fell into that ‘uh oh, possible terrorist’ description, and more interestingly, most of those people had already played out this possible scenario in their head, adding to the undercurrent of every day anxiety.
I think it’s very easy for those who don’t live in uStates to underestimate the atmosphere of fear and hatred here.
