I was thinking that what Trump is saying about immigrants isn’t really much worse than what many presidents have said about the indigenous peoples. That doesn’t mean Trump is right, it’s just that maybe he’s following an American tradition of being a racist totalitarian assbag.

Marcus Ranum@1,
Oh well, then, I’m sure immigrants -- and indigenous peoples, Muslims, African-Americans, women and LBGTQ people will all agree with you that Trump and Clinton are equally bad, and those with votes might as well give them to Trump to piss off the establishment.
These are valid concerns expressed by decent and patriotic citizens from all backgrounds, all over. We also have to be honest about the fact that not everyone who seeks to join our country will be able to successfully assimilate. Sometimes it’s just not going to work out. It’s our right, as a sovereign nation to chose [sic] immigrants that we think are the likeliest to thrive and flourish and love us.
Now I know Trump has no love for Indians, he makes that clear at every opportunity. Here’s the thing, though, us Indians were declared sovereign nations some time ago, so how about if we choose the immigrants to this county that we think are the likeliest to thrive and flourish and love us? Seems about right to me.

The New York Times literally called that speechrant a “hate speech” (The Immigrants Turned Away), and quoted David Duke as saying it was a “great speech”. The impression I have is could have been taken from mein kampf.

Speaking of that speech, and Indigenous peoples, this was my take on it: https://proxy.freethought.online/affinity/2016/09/01/the-speech/

blf@#4:
Come to think of it, at least Hitler wrote m.k. That’s more than Trump can say about all of “his” books.
